Tahlequah Farmers Market was introduced to the FARM to SCHOOL program in 2014 by Tahlequah B.E.S.T. Coalition and Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation. By partnering with our local organizations and coalitions we are able to encourage healthy eating habits and provide access to locally grown food for children and families in our community, as well as provide direct sales access for Oklahoma farms.
The Farm to School program is funded by a CDC grant.
The grant and our partners allow us to provide each child with a TFM shopping bag, recipe cards, fruit & vegetable information, magnets, and most importantly, "VEGGIE BUCKS" for each child to spend on veggies & fruit!

We have several vendors set up at each school, and some assistants to help the children shop.
Each child receives Veggie Bucks to spend. Children are welcome to bring cash from home to spend as well.
We've been working with 3rd graders mainly, but in much smaller communities we've been able to provide for every grade. It's a wonderful experience to introduce the children to variety of fruits and veggies.

Mayor of the Market, Marla Saeger talks to the kids.
When you join us for FARM TO SCHOOL, you'll meet the Mayor of the Market, President, Marla Saeger. She will be your guide for the day. She'll tell you all about our local farmers, healthy eating, and shopping at the farmers' market.
Once the bags are passed out shopping will begin!
Children will get to visit each vendor and shop for their own vegetables and fruit!
This is such an exciting opportunity for the children to get involved and make their own healthy decisions. They learn so much from this experience: where their food comes from, healthy eating habits, nutrition facts, community support, money handling, and so much more. We always look forward to Farm to School.

"One great success is the “Farm to School” event that brought the Tahlequah Farmers’ Market to several 3rd Grade classes. Each 3rd grader was given “Veggie Vouchers” to use at the Farmers’ Market."
